On the morning of August 14th, a symposium on development planning and talent training of the law discipline was held in the reception hall of the main building. President Qiu Yong presided over the meeting and Vice President Peng Gang attended the meeting.

Qiu Yong delivers a speech

After listening to the work reports and teachers’ speeches, President Qiu Yong congratulated the Law School on its achievements in discipline construction, education and teaching, and talent training, and on the behalf of the university thanked the teachers of the Law School for their efforts. Qiu Yong noted that the Law School has a good foundation for development, and the year of 2020, which marks the start of the third decade after the restoration of Tsinghua University’s Law School, also serves as a starting point for the school to “start out again”. When the international and domestic situations are both in a critical period now, Tsinghua University should be determined and composed, make long-term plans, boost confidence and strive for better development. The needs of society and the times are the most powerful drivers for the development of our disciplines. While Tsinghua is accelerating the development of liberal arts and implementing the “Double High-level Program” for the development of liberal arts education, the Law School should strive to become a highland for the development of liberal arts in Tsinghua.

In response to the ideas and suggestions put forward by the teachers of the Law School, President Qiu Yong pointed out that the school should further develop consensus and strength. In discipline construction, we should not only consider the integrity and balance of the discipline, but also highlight key points, and develop 2-3 key discipline directions. While continuously improving the overall level of the discipline, the Law School should develop its own discipline characteristics. We should continue to exert our strength in serving the needs of the country by constantly improving the supporting ability of the discipline of law to the development of our country. Qiu stressed that the long-term development of a school depends on three core elements: good culture, good scholars and good students. Teachers should have humanistic spirit and profound scholarship, and an atmosphere of unity and progress should permeate the school. In team building, it is necessary to introduce more talents and develop various forms to attract talents.

For the future development of the Law School and the law discipline, President Qiu Yong pointed out that, first, the Law School should develop a unified understanding of the orientation and objectives of talent training, making clear “what kind of talents should be trained”, to reflect the position of the Law School. Second, in discipline construction, the practical needs of the society should be considered, with attention to the development of emerging technologies, practical education should be strengthened and the international vision of running schools should be upgraded. Third, in the future, reform should be emphasized in the talent training, discipline planning and overall development of the Law School. To become a highland of humanities, the Law School must first be determined to engage in continuous reform. Fourth, social resources and university resources should be fully used to push forward existing strategic measures. Fifth, first-class universities have first-class vision and taste, and the development of liberal arts should return to cultural construction. Good scholars and good culture can provide the strongest support for discipline development. President Qiu Yong noted that the university will actively support the construction of the Law School and the development of the law discipline, and look forward to the new development of the Law School in the new era and the new heights scaled by the Law School.

Peng Gang delivers a speech

Prof. Peng Gang noted that in talent training, the Law School has put forward the requirements of having “more solid general knowledge, stronger foundation, more specialized expertise and more advanced frontier”, and that we should really implement relevant measures to improve the quality of talent training. We should continue to promote the reform of the academic evaluation system and encourage teachers to do truly valuable research. Meanwhile, he hoped that teachers of the Law School would participate in school affairs more extensively and deeply, and offer suggestions for the development of the school.
